Navigating the Shifting Screen

Working Towards a Sustainable Feature Film Ecosystem

This research was funded by the federal Department of Canadian Heritage and undertaken by audience strategist Annelise Larson. During this research, which included a review of reports, articles, studies, policy documents, industry initiatives and emerging distribution models from Canada and around the world, as well as interviews with 32 international distribution experts, some patterns have emerged. The ways audiences discover, access and engage with films have changed significantly, while many of the systems designed to support Canadian film remain built around older models of release and measurement.

There are significant challenges, practical opportunities, and emerging strategies that can help Canadian films connect more effectively with audiences across theatrical, festival, community, digital and non-traditional pathways. The future of Canadian film distribution can be strengthened by understanding how audience behaviour has shifted, and by building more flexible, audience-centred approaches to reach, engagement and cultural impact.
